France – Monday 22/02/2021 – energiesdelamer.eu. Atlantique Offshore Energy, the Business Unit of Chantiers de l’Atlantique dedicated to marine energies, leader of a consortium formed with GE’s Grid Solutions and SDI, a subsidiary of DEME Group, has just received confirmation of the order from the consortium made up of EDF Renewables, Enbridge and wpd offshore, to design, manufacture and install the electrical substation for the Calvados offshore wind farm, which will be located off Courseulles- sur-Mer (Normandy, north west of France).

This project consists of 64 wind turbines for a total capacity of nearly 450 MW. The planned production will, when it comes into service in 2024, will cover the equivalent of the domestic electricity consumption of more than 630,000 people, or 90% of the inhabitants of Calvados.

The electrical substation will collect and transform the electricity produced by these wind turbines, to transfer it to the earth while ensuring the remote control of the wind farm. It will be installed in 2023.

The selected consortium brings together the know-how of Atlantique Offshore Energy which will take care of the design, manufacture and commissioning of the topside and the jacket-type foundation, GE’s Grid Solutions, in charge of the design, manufacturing and commissioning of high-voltage electrical equipment and protection and control systems, and SDI, for the transport and installation of these structures. This consortium had previously won the contract for the substations for the offshore wind farms in Saint-Nazaire and Fécamp. The substation of the Calvados offshore wind farm will be for the most part identical to those of the Saint Nazaire and Fécamp offshore wind farms, in order to benefit from their experience feedback and optimize maintenance and operation between the customer’s various offshore wind farms.

This contract brings to four the number of electrical substations registered in Chantiers de l’Atlantique’s order book.

Characteristics of the Calvados substation

– Power: around 450 MW
– Height with foundation: 65 meters (Topside: 15 meters / Jacket: 50 meters, including 30 meters submerged)
– Weight: around 3,500 tonnes (Topside: around 2,200 tonnes / Jacket: around 1,300 tonnes)
